Denmark's biggest meteorite fall

On February 6, 2016, the sky over eastern Zealand was illuminated by a very powerful fireball. In the Copenhagen area, violent oversonic bangs were heard and shortly afterwards a flurry of meteorites fell into the area around Ejby. The meteorite fall was the largest in Denmark and the second in Denmark in just 7 years. The meteorite turned out to consist of primitive material from the origin of the Solar System - about 35 million years older than our own planet. The lecture will talk about how we can use meteorites to understand how our Solar System came into being — and what happens when earth is hit by small and large...

With Ørsted in search of the light

H.C. Ørsted's discovery 200 years ago is part of the foundation of modern astrophysics. His experiment showed how electricity and magnetism were connected. It led directly to the discovery that visible light, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, as well as radio waves are all electromagnetic waves with different wavelengths. This discovery was fundamental to astronomy flourishing as a modern science. It has made it possible to determine the formation of elements, the existence of planets outside the solar system, as well as of dark matter, dark energy, black holes, cosmic dust, and made it possible to map the history of the universe. Please note that signing up for this...

Juice flow in the trees: how can it run around?

Trees are some of nature's most successful organisms in terms of distribution, age and size. They are completely dependent on effective fluid transport all the way from the roots to the leaves and on from the leaves out to everything that needs to grow. And they do so without key organs, like the heart and brain – they are simply world champions in decentralized management. This requires (as for us) an efficient vascular network, and the trees are divided into xylem and phloem, which provide water and sugar transport respectively. Astonishingly, the juice movement, even its driving force, is surrounded by many mysteries. The leaves of trees are able...
