The statistical analysis of economic time series has formed the basis for economic decisions for many hundreds of years. The methods have long been based on the assumption that the series were stationary, and it is not until the last 20 years that methods based on non-stationarity have been developed. The essential concept is "cointegration", introduced by Clive Granger, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2003. The term provides the ability to model economic relationships as stationary relationships between non-stationary processes. The concept will be examined in connection with the widely used error correction model, and as economic example and motivation I will use the "law...

Environmental problems have been given a great deal of attention in the public over the last few decades. In parallel, the requirement to be able to demonstrate the state of nature and the environment is increased in the desire to optimise efforts to reduce the human impact of nature. Examples of the use of the statistics to document the nature and environmental status of the marine areas will be examined. In addition, the focus will be on the use of indicators of natural and environmental status and the statistical problems such a simplified description of the ecosystem entails. Finally, the necessary dialogue/interaction between statisticians and biologists/chemists will be highlighted.

The idea of probabilities has been in human beings at least as long as science. If you do not have complete knowledge – and you almost never have – then you have to resort to probabilities. Despite its age, there is surprisingly great disagreement over the status of the concept. How do you determine a probability, for example? Is it absolute and objective? In physics, the problem has existed for many hundreds of years, and has literally demanded death victims – for example, Boltzman, who took his own life, was very depressed by the criticism of his probability interpretation of concepts such as temperature and entropy. Out of just the studio...

Fishing quotas are set politically, each year the Fisheries Ministers meet in December to set next year's fishing quotas, a ministerial meeting that attracts a lot of media attention. The Ministers shall take their decisions, inter alia: Based on an assessment of the number of fish in the sea and the risks associated with different future fishing quotas. This assessment takes place during the year and is coordinated through the International Council for the Sea (ICES). The studies and analyses are carried out by researchers employed by the national fisheries research institutes. In Denmark it is "Denmark's fisheries surveys" that are responsible for the Danish contribution to this international work. Assessment of how many fish there are in...

In situations where conflicting interests are broken, the parties can often agree on a "balance" or also arise such – for example, in the economy – so to speak by themselves. Conflict situations such as these can be treated as games. A little surprising, this also applies to situations where a nature observer tries to unfriend the nature of its secrets. It can be regarded as a game between the observer and nature. But what are the rules and what do they play about? Here, codes come into the picture as models for observation strategies. The observer wants to observe effectively, but it seems as if nature is a counterplayer who tries to complicate...
