The Earth's largest ecosystem has been discovered deep down underground, both on land and in the sea. Through geological wells down to 100 million years old deposits are found a wealth of hitherto unknown bacterial species, which make up one-tenth of the living biomass on earth.
This life thrives on energy from ancient organic matter that was buried during previous geological periods. Perhaps energy from radioactive radiation can also help sustain this deep biosphere.
