The Society for the Dissemination of Natural Science and Ørsted A/S will celebrate the 200th anniversary of electromagnetism by honoring researchers and high school teachers and the Society and Haldor Topsøe A/S will celebrate by honoring primary school teachers.
In 2020, it was 200 years since H.C. Ørsted discovered electromagnetism, and in this connection the energy company Ørsted has partnered with the Society for the Dissemination of Natural Science to raise awareness of H.C. Ørsted, his epochal discoveries and their importance to modern life. In this context, a press release from SNU and Ørsted A/S was issued:
"We owe H.C. Ørsted much in our work to create a world that runs entirely on green energy. That is why we are happy to work with the company for the spread of nature, which H.C. Ørsted herself founded in 1824, "says Jakob Askou Bøss, strategy and communication director at Ørsted.
"We are pleased with the cooperation with Ørsted, which will greatly enhance our ability to publicise H.C. Ørsted and his epoch-making discoveries. We look forward to recognising and highlighting, through the new collaboration with Ørsted, the country's best researchers and high school teachers in science and technology. We are already starting in 2019 together with the preparations to celebrate in 2020 the 200 year of H.C. Ørsted's discovery of electromagnetism, which today forms the basis for the way we supply our modern society with energy, "says President of the company of the naturalist Publicity, Professor Dorte Olesen.
The cooperation between the company for the spread of nature and Ørsted will focus on promoting the dissemination of science and technology to the Danish population by, among other things, the promotion of skilled high school teachers in science and technology and Unique scientists in physics and chemistry. The new cooperation implies that the company will be able to distribute the H.C. Ørsted gold medal for the first time since 1989.
Facts about the H.C. Ørsted gold medal
The gold medal is awarded after 30 years again here in 2019, and then once again in 2020 in the very 200 year of H.C. Ørsted's discovery of electromagnetism. One medal must go to a chemist, the other to a physicist. The medal is awarded in collaboration with the science company.
The H.C. Ørsted Gold Medal is awarded to a person who has completed world-class research in physics or in the field of chemistry. Ørsted A/S supports the distribution of the H.C. Ørsted Gold medal, to which a travel grant of 75,000 kr. The gold medal will be awarded for the first time in October 2019 and the recipient is selected by a nomination committee chaired by Professor Klaus Bock. 2019 nominations are expected to be convened with a deadline of 31. March 2019.

Ørsted støtter samtidig uddelingen af H.C. Ørsted bronzemedaljen til særligt inspirerende gymnasielærere inden for naturvidenskab og teknologi i årene 2019-2024. I disse år gives udover selve medaljen også et rejselegat på 25.000 kr. til modtageren og et beløb på 50.000 kr. til et projekt på skolen i forbindelse med undervisningen.
Man kan indstille inspirerende gymnasielærere til at modtage bronzemedaljen ved at sende en motiveret indstilling til snu@naturvidenskab.net. Indstillingen lukker hvert af årene den 15. oktober.”
Selskabet for Naturlærens Udbredelse indgik senere en tilsvarende aftale med firmaet Haldor Topsøe A/S om at støtte en tildeling af H.C. Ørsted medaljen i bronze til inspirerende grundskolelærere indenfor SNUs fagkreds. Indstillingen lukker hvert af årene den 30. marts.
